About Smart Factory Gurus

Two sides of the same factory,
finally in one room.

We are Matt Barber and Kunal Wagh — one from the software vendor side, one from the factory floor. Smart Factory Gurus exists because nobody was teaching what actually happens in the gap between the two.

Why we started this

The room where nobody agrees on what "smart" means.

Between us, we have sat on both sides of more smart factory conversations than we can count — in the room where a vendor pitches a platform, and in the room six months later where the factory floor tries to make it work. Those two rooms rarely talk to each other, and the gap between what gets sold and what gets used is where most transformation programmes quietly go wrong.

We had each been writing and talking about it separately for years — Matt from the vendor world, Kunal from the manufacturing side. The response made one thing obvious: people did not want another platform pitch. They wanted both perspectives, straight, from people who had lived on each side of the divide. That became Smart Factory Gurus, and Smart Factory Core, the course that puts both perspectives in one place.

Matt Barber
Vendor perspective Matt Barber Global Head MES

Matt has spent over twenty years in MES, starting as an engineer writing code at a small MES company and working his way through implementation projects, project management, solution design, sales and product leadership. He has seen the same mistakes repeat across dozens of factories — and writes MES Matters to help people avoid them before they are three months into a rollout.

Kunal Wagh
Manufacturer perspective Kunal Wagh IT Operations Leader

Kunal started on the solution-provider side in presales and implementation, seeing problems up close before they reached the factory floor. He is now on the manufacturing side, making these systems work on a real production line — and hosts MESsy Mondays and writes MES 101 to translate the vocabulary for the people running the plant.

How we work

Three rules we hold ourselves to

No platform to sell We are not vendor-sponsored and we are not selling a product on the side. What we teach is what we would tell a friend.
Both sides, always Every topic gets the vendor's view and the factory's view. If we cannot show both, we do not publish it yet.
Process before technology Nearly every failure we have seen started with a tool before the problem was defined. We teach it in that order.
